| THE MILLION MOM MARCHERS:
THEY STILL DON'T GET IT
|
| By Larry Swickard |
| Liberals are fond of mocking bumper stickers that remind readers
that people, not guns, kill people. Gun prohibitionists contend that the
mere existence of a firearm, an inanimate object, in almost any
situation is the cause of violence rather than criminal intent. As I
type this, FOX NEWS is describing the scene in Illinois where the bodies
of two eight year old girls have been found stabbed to death. Banning
firearms and other weapons has and never will do anything to tame the
evil within the hearts of people who commit such despicable crimes.
Roger McGrath notes that "Gun laws promise much and deliver little
because they affect only the law abiding; something like sheep passing
resolutions requiring vegetarianism while wolves circle the flock"
[Roger McGrath, "A God-given Natural Right," Chronicles, 10 (October
2003) p-17]. For what can only be attributed to self inflicted
ignorance, the gun prohibition left, the intellectual bodyguards of
Bolshevism, remain blind to history and common sense. They call
conservatives and gun owners fascists, adorn their cars with
"Question Authority" bumper stickers, and yet would paradoxically
disarm American citizens leaving guns in the hands of only the police
and military! Prohibitionists, especially Hollywood lefties, condemn law
abiding citizens who protect hearth with firearms from criminal attack
but then organize protests for the release of death row cop killer Mumia
Abu Jamal because he wrote a book in prison claiming to be a Black
Panther, a Marxist revolutionary, and admirer of Fidel Castro. These
same liberals beat their chests and foamed at the mouth in outrage
because Mr. Smith spat in the face of Hanoi Jane (no I wouldn't have
done the same) but remain strangely quiet over the fact that
conservatives like Ann Coulter, Pat Buchanan, and David Horowitz are
routinely assaulted with pies, salad dressing, and even fists by campus
leftists during university speaking engagements [Ann Coulter, "Its Funny
Only Until Someone Loses A Pie," Human Events, 14 (April 18 2005) p-6].
The so called Million Mom Marchers provide ample examples of the
gun prohibitionists inability to understand concepts like right and
wrong, good and evil. On the website maintained by the Million Mom Marchers (commonly referred to as soccer-mom socialists, at least by me) they claim to be dedicated to "...creating an America free from gun violence where all Americans are safe at home, at school, at work, and in their communities. We call on Congress to Halt the Assault [emphasis in the original. For some reason liberals seem driven to capitalize their emotions] on our families, our safety, our civil rights, and our gun laws" (at http://www.millionmommarch.org/about/posted 10/29/2004, 3 pages)." Conspiracy minded theorists in the U.F.O. community and the "Truth Is Out There" crowd suggest that the breathtaking speed with which technology advances results from "reverse engineering." The government has captured alien spaceships, weapons, and gadgets and takes them apart, reverse engineering, to see how they work. The same approach can be applied to the statements of the Million Mom Marchers to ascertain their true agenda. In their propaganda, the Million Mom Marchers make no mention, not even once, of the criminal hand the wields the weapon. They argue that the possession of firearms by the law abiding is an assault on their civil rights. What alternative universe do they live in? They make no mention of the fact that the right to keep and bear arms is a God-given right recognized and enshrined in the United States Constitution. The intense lobbying by the Million Mom Marchers to take away that right is and of itself an attack on the rights of free people. They also make no mention of the fact that the life criminals take from their victims is a God-given right. The Million Mom Marchers want to take from us the right to protect that life which, once taken, cannot be restored by any amount of money. I can almost understand how wealthy liberal Hollywood can be so divorced from reality. After all, many of them live in private gated communities on property patrolled by video cameras and armed guards. What excused can be given by the rest of the Marchers? And is it guns that menace our families, schools, work, and communities as the Marchers claim? The truth is that leftist ideology is responsible to a large degree for having given birth to America's violent and criminal society. Beginning on the campuses of early twentieth century America, intellectuals declared that God was dead and they embraced Marxism or nihilism. The propriety of morals and values based upon the Scriptures were questioned and God and his laws were buried. In time these movements would bear fruit in the 1960s when the youth culture would embrace hedonism, self absorption, and self actualization with its religious tenets of drug use, promiscuous sex, abortion, and a "if it feels good do it" world view. The youth culture challenged and undermined the authority of the central foundational pillars of American civilization; family, church, and schools. Once these pillars had been sufficiently undermined, was it any wonder that so many people free from moral constraints began to give in to their baser urges and desires? Are we surprised that they are raising children more base than themselves? The children of these world views are angry and violent often punishing society for all its perceived injustices. And the solution of the philosophy underlying the Million Mom Marchers who gave birth to those attempting to destroy our civilization, is to disarm its innocent victims. Schools have adopted "zero-tolerance gun free zones." If an armed teenager goes on a violent rampage at school, teachers and students are locked in their classrooms huddled together waiting to be saved or shot. Guns are banned and confiscated in American cities. Places of business refuse to allow law abiding citizens to carry concealed firearms on store premises but do nothing about armed criminals on their way to rob and kill its employees. Following World War Two, the Allies forced many German citizens to visit Auschwitz to view what their government had done. Perhaps the same should be required of gun prohibitionists and the left. Professor John R. Lott Jr. has probably done more research with regard to the relationship between firearms and crime than anyone else. He concludes that more guns in the hands of citizens does not lead to more violent crime. In fact, the converse is true. More people in possession of firearms tends to reduce violent crime [John R. Lott, Jr., More Guns, Less Crime (Chicago, Illinois, The University of Chicago Press, 1998), pp. 21-110]. Dr. Lott's research also reveals that law abiding citizens employ a firearm to fend off violent criminal attack anywhere from two to two and a half million times a year. In only two percent of those incidents does the intended victim actually fire the weapon [John R. Lott, Jr., The Bias Against Guns: Why Almost Everything You've Heard About Gun Control Is Wrong, (Washington, D.C., Regnery Publishing, Inc., 2003) pp. 21-22 and 259-260]. Richard Poe, award winning journalist, New York Times best selling author, and editor of David Horowitz's FrontpageMagazine.com, exposes the hypocrisy of the Million Mom Marchers in a recent book. He says that the basic assumption of the prohibitionist Million Moms is that "lax" U.S. gun laws actually encourage more violence [Richard Poe, The Seven Myths of Gun Control: Reclaiming the Truth About Guns, Crime, and the Second Amendment, (Roseville, California, FORUM, An Imprint of Prima Publishing, 2001), p-83]. Again, gun prohibitionist almost never mention the criminals who cause violent crime. Rosie O'Donnell, the left's female version of Michael Moore, laments that the 20,000 gun laws in America are canceled out by the fact that 200 million guns are in private hands. Apparently she believes there should be an individual law for each and every single firearm in America. Poe notes that most criminals in America choose to burglarize empty homes out of fear of being shot by the resident. In fact only 13% of the homes that are burglarized are occupied. The percentage jumps to around 50% in England where criminals know the residents are not armed (Poe, 87). Less firearms leads to more crime. O'Donnell has also claimed that 4,000 children are killed by guns each year. Accessibility of firearms, not the criminal is the problem. But O'Donnell ignores America's long history during which guns were readily available and even accessible to kids and murders and misuse was relatively rare. For the record, one can arrive at O'Donnell's figure of 4,000, which is 11 kids a day, by including all the 18 to 20 year old gang members and drug dealers who die shooting it out with each other. The actual number, for those ten and younger is about 0.4 per day and this number is on the decline (Poe, 121). Finally, when the son of Barbara Graham was gunned down in 1999, she joined the Million Mom Marchers. Apparently not satisfied with the police investigation into the murder, she went looking for the suspect and she was armed. In fact, she gunned down 23 year old Kikko Smith for her son's murder with a .45 caliber pistol on January 26, 2000. Unfortunately, Smith had nothing to do with the murder of Graham's son and he is paralyzed from the waist down. When police arrested Barbara Graham in her home, they not only collected the .45 (illegal in Washington D.C.) but three other handguns and a Tec-9 submachine gun as well. Perhaps it really is true that the reason gun prohibitionists are so hysterically anti-gun is they are projecting their own fears over what they would do with firearms on the rest of us. The Million Mom Marchers, like so many others on the left, cannot come to grips with the fact that people commit crimes because they want to and because so many of them are violent and evil. Firearms availability plays no part in their psychology but a society that blames itself for their anger and violence, and strives to disarm potential victims does. Dialoguing with liberals has taught me one important fact of life. When we enter the room of truth there is no difficulty finding a place to sit but in the chamber of lies, there is standing room only.
I've been saving this for the perfect story, this is it! Thanks Gene, it is a GREAT concealed carry rig! Illustration provided by Gene, added by the Webmistress |
