Aggressive serial burglars raising concern in KC

21 September 2007
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City Police are tracking an aggressive group of burglars who have cleaned out several homes recently.

Friday afternoon, police responded to yet another home burglary in south Kansas City.
They said the suspects have been targeting homes in the Birchwood Hills and Southern Hills neighborhoods and may be branching out to other areas too.

Mike Ash was one of the first victims.  Burglars stole tools and building supplies from a house he is rehabbing in south Kansas City.

"I was in disbelief," he said. "They came in through the back door, busted the back door open and then just started hauling stuff out."

While NBC Action News was interviewing Ash Friday afternoon, burglars struck again just a few blocks away in the Southern Hills subdivision.

Witnesses said they saw four suspects, just like in the other burglaries. A neighbor got pictures during one of at least 15 home break-ins in the past month.

"It begins with a knock at the door, when no one answers, they kick it open," said Sgt. John Cisper, Kansas City Police.

Usually no one is home, but once a resident woke from a nap.

"They started kicking the door open," said Sgt. Cisper. "He got up, went downstairs, they pulled a pistol out and pointed it at him."

The burglars have been seen driving a gray pickup truck or sometimes a van.

"It's some guys who know what they're doing," said Ash.

Ash lives nearby and is concerned about the safety of his wife and four children.

"We're going to be smart, lock our doors, use our house alarm," Ash said.

Anyone who recognizes the truck or the suspects is asked to call the TIPS Hotline: (816) 474-TIPS. Police are also checking a report of similar break-ins in Grandview, Mo., Leawood, Kan., and Overland Park, Kan.
