Misfiring on gun control

Americans for Gun Safety, which you say is hardly a gun control group, is nothing but a gun control group. It has a millionaire benefactor, several dozen workers and who else?

Stolen guns are being sold at gun shows? The government's own study shows that criminals get only 0.07 percent of their weapons from gun shows. Please tell me where you received this information. Criminals by and large get their firearms via illegal means, none of which occur at gun shows. Most are stolen or are bought for the criminal by friends and relatives. This is called a straw purchase and is already illegal. Just how will one more law stop criminals?

This country survived the Cold War with a policy of strength through deterrence. The same policy works for the average citizen. Comprehensive studies by John Lott have shown that citizen firearms ownership and concealed carry by honest citizens decrease crime.

No loopholes

Your June 1 editorial on "gun control" talks about "crackdowns on gun shows where stolen weapons are sold and traded without restrictions."

There are no gun show loopholes. All federal, state and local laws apply at gun shows.
