Gun law expert commends Coburn for blocking Schumer ramrod effort Gun rights expert John M. Snyder this morning commended Sen. Tom Coburn (OK) for blocking an attempt by Sen. Chuck Schumer (NY) to ramrod firearms legislation through the United States Senate without full consideration of the proposal. “America’s millions of law-abiding gun owners owe Coburn their appreciation for his action,” said Snyder. “Schumer tried to bring a so-called National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) improvements bill out of the Senate Judiciary Committee and directly to the floor of the Senate without amendment by virtue of a unanimous consent agreement. Under such a procedure, a piece of legislation may be brought to the floor and acted upon unless at least one Senator objects. Fortunately, Coburn objected and that is why he now is a hero of the gun rights movement.” Snyder said the NICS bill already was rammed through the House of Representatives in a similar manner earlier this year. He pointed out that Schumer and Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (NY) are prime movers of the proposal. “Both,” he said, “are notorious opponents of the individual Second Amendment civil right of law-abiding American citizens to keep and bear arms.” The bill supposedly is designed to strengthen the mental health requirements of the NICS reporting system. It came about as a reaction to the multiple murders by a crazed gunman in the spring of this year on the campus of Virginia Tech. As Coburn pointed out, however, the bill does not fund the process by which veterans, as well as any other American who has been unfairly tagged as having mental health concerns, can regain his or her Second Amendment rights. In addition, added Snyder, “the bill does not deal directly with the problem. At Virginia Tech, the university prohibits students and professors from carrying guns on campus even if and when they have state issued permits to carry concealed firearms. Consequently, no one was available to protect innocent people from the armed madman. A number of other colleges and universities follow similar inane policies. “What Congress really ought to do, if it truly wants to rectify the situation, is cut off federal funding to colleges and universities which prohibit their professors and students from carrying guns on campus if they have state issued permits authorizing them to carry concealed firearms. This so-called NICS improvement bill needs a lot of work, some amendatory action, before it really is ready for cogent congressional consideration.” A former National Rifle Association editor, Snyder is Public Affairs Director of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, PR Director of the National Association of Chiefs of Police, and Treasurer of the Second Amendment Foundation. |
