Huckabee: Shootings prove need of gun owners' rights |
| Feb. 09, 2008 |
| OLATHE, Kan. -- Shootings at a council meeting in suburban St. Louis demonstrated the importance of protecting gun owner's rights and Americans' ability to protect themselves, Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee said Friday. Huckabee, campaigning in Kansas, was asked by a reporter to square comments on abortion about protecting the sanctity of life with his support for gun rights, in light of the Missouri shootings. A gunman opened fire on a Kirkwood, Mo., council meeting Thursday, critically wounding the mayor, killing two police officers and three city officials. The gunman, identified as Charles Lee "Cookie" Thornton, was fatally shot by law enforcers. "There's nothing to square," Huckabee told reporters after a rally in Olathe. "When you have a person who violates the law by murdering somebody, that's not the same as a law-abiding citizen defending himself. "Thank goodness there was a police officer there to stop the killer," he added. "Had there not been a law-abiding person -- in that case a police officer -- to stop him, more people would have been killed." Huckabee said the Second Amendment, protecting the right to bear arms, allows people to protect themselves, their families and their property. "If we don't have that capacity, then we're subject to the people who don't abide by the laws at all," he said. Asked whether he might understand if some victims' relatives disagreed with his position, he said: "I think people who are relatives of the victims would understand that, thank God, there was somebody who put the killer, you know, down before he killed other people." |
