Gun Control, Book Reviews and Denying Emergency Care |
|
January 11, 2007 By John Longenecker |
| Paul Helmke’s Huffington Post book review of 1/9/07 denies
care to the innocent. Mr. Helmke of The Brady Center reviews a book whose thesis is the old saw that gun violence is a health issue. Knowing a little something about health, I’ll say the treatment stinks. The first thing the only-shootings-are-a-health-problem mob forgets is the practice that you treat the patient as a whole. In battling only one aspect of all crime – shootings – one cannot just cut into people’s rights, carve up whole healthy, functioning organs, ignore more severe emergencies, amputate healthy parts and still say that one has understanding. Understanding is the most significant thing lacking in the left. In short, the anti-gun mob misses the diagnosis, and the treatment is pure quackery. Another practice the obsessives ignore is the doctrine of patient advocate. The anti-liberty mob doesn’t give a damn about the people. Liberty-hating notables have called for the disarmament of the populace non-violently in order to see the political ascendency of one-sided force. Every liberty-hater does their small part to support disarming the people in propaganda, refusal to respect values, punishing independence, carping, and outright lies. But the anti-gun movement is not anti-violence after all; it grows violence – devotedly paving the way for that ascendancy of one-sided force – which is where their entire movement is flawed in pure quackery. Like the Philippines, the United Kingdom, Australia, New York, Washington, D.C. where crime soars - where they deny the innocent their own health care of personal weapons. Whole countries have gone to hell thanks to citizen disarmament. Quackery. Because, you cannot prevent violence by disarming the target, nor by calling resistance violence. You only grow unanswered aggression, which results in pure violence and builds those crime statistics into hundreds of thousands. You might as well take the side of the patient’s infection by confiscating antibiotics. How’s that for an analogy? Gun control takes the side of the criminals. Then there is the issue of patient consent: under our system, anti-family meddlers cannot suppress a civil right which is written to be impervious to abuses of due process, no one may deter officials from their oath of office to protect that right, and meddlers may not try to dissuade others from enjoying the right, which is inalienable. Finally, there is patient education, a fourth practice of good patient care excluded from the anti-liberty formulary. Taking the side of the criminal cheats our patient out of advocacy, patient education, informed consent and self-management – facts everyone should know to make their better informed decisions for their own health and safety. 1. The anti-gun mob doesn’t divulge that police have no mandate to protect individuals. This is an immense logical void in the one-sided disarmament movement. 2. The anti-liberty refuse to mention that police support the armed citizen as the first line of defense, and that citizens possess all the legal authority they need to stop a crime from escalating. Surprised? 3. The anti-liberty mob refuses to divulge that when a gun owner uses a gun to stop a crime from escalating – sometimes their own murder – they oftentimes avoid violence rather well, namely the shooting of the aggressor. Whether the aggressor is held for police or they just flee, the situation is de-escalated and no one is harmed, and the FBI says it happens more than 2.5 million times each year. This is based on reports turned in annually from police around the country. The FBI calls it The Uniform Crime Report and you can read it for yourself. Compare this 2.5 million de-escalations to the FBI’s reports of about 47,000 shooting fatalities every year. 47,000 shooting fatalities a year, mostly crime-on-crime, suicide and about eighty accidental shootings per year. Yes, only about eighty. [Incidentally, just because one gets ahold of a police report where the suspect states that the murder, drive-by or robbery shooting was somehow an accident, it doesn’t count as an accidental shooting. Nice try.] The proper treatment for all criminal violence – knifings, robberies, rapes, mayhems, muggings, beatings, and most of all, abductions – is proven to be safe and effective when taken according to directions. Repeal all gun laws. You cannot rationally expect to prevent violence such as abductions by disarming the parents. You cannot rationally expect to prevent violence – like abductions – by attacking only the targets. The real violence picture in America is an aggregate of knifings, rapes, robberies…well, you get it. Not to mention repeat offenders. Who stands for the victim? Repeal all gun laws. Maybe it is a health problem, but the proper treatment is withheld by quacks who want to keep neglecting the patient to death. Talk about denying care . . . ________________ |
