A man took his estranged wife hostage in a Northland McDonald's about 1 p.m. today, police said, and a standoff with police continued into the afternoon.

Traffic was snarled around Metro North Shopping Center, just west of the restaurant at 150 NW Barry Road. A stretch of Barry Road as far east as North Oak Trafficway was closed. The mall's far east entrance was closed, but the mall remained open and busy.

Police said the man and woman are from Liberty, but did not release their names.

Police spokesman Darin Snapp gave this account:

The man entered the McDonald's sometime in the morning and asked to talk to his wife. The manager refused to let him see her.

The man left and came back shortly before 1, armed with a handgun. He allowed the other employees and customers to leave.

By 3 p.m., police negotiators were on the scene but had not yet made contact with the man.

Officers could see the couple through a window and said the man was pointing his handgun at her. She appeared to be distraught, and he was trying to calm her down.

The woman has a protection order against her husband, police said.
