General Membership Meeting Minutes of WMSA November 16, 2006 Missouri National Guard Armory, 2323 S. Crysler in Independence The November general membership meeting of Western Missouri Shooters Alliance was called to order at 7:17 PM., with WMSA president Sheila Stokes-Begley conducting. The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Sheila. After the Pledge of Allegiance, Sheila called for the minutes of the September 21, 2006 general membership meeting, which were read by Rory Marshall, recording secretary. Bob Hansen, WMSA treasurer, reported that the funds in the WMSA treasury currently stood at approximately $8,500. In old business, Kevin Jamison, WMSA past president, reported that the litigation filed by WMSA member Adam Petrie, against the Jackson County Sheriff’s office, was still in process with a trial date set for mid-December. Members may recall that Mr. Petrie had attempted to get the sheriff in Jackson County to issue him a permit to acquire a handgun without having to answer questions that are not required under Missouri statutes. In a recent action in small claims court, the judge ruled against Adam despite clear statutory guidelines. Kevin has been retained by Adam to represent him in the upcoming litigation. Since the outcome of this action is of interest to all Jackson County handgun owners, WMSA will continue to follow the story and report more information as it becomes available on the WMSA website at www.wmsa.net and in the next WMSA general membership meeting in January of 2007. We certainly wish Adam and Kevin success with Adam’s appeal to a higher court! Sheila told members in attendance that our WMSA radio ads aired on radio station KMZU for two weeks with modest success in recruiting new WMSA members. Sheila said that members who wish to do so could sign up for the WMSA newsgroup at http://groups.yahoo.com and could then listen to the actual radio ad that had been running. There is no cost to members who wish to take advantage of the WMSA Yahoo group. In addition, members can post bulletin board messages for other members to read at that website. In new business, Sheila mentioned that the RK gun show would be held on the 2nd and 3rd of December in Kansas City and called on members in attendance to volunteer to help man the WMSA table on Saturday the 2nd. In more new business, the somewhat mixed results in the recent general election in Missouri were discussed. She reminded members that historically, it is not unusual for Republicans in the U.S. Congress to lose seats in the sixth year of a two-term president. She stated that a number of Democrats who were recently elected claim to be moderates and also claimed to be supporters of the Second Amendment. We expect that the Democratic party leadership at the federal level to force newly-elected moderate Democrats to vote consistent with their more leftist senior party officials. WMSA plans to follow the voting records of those moderate Democrats to see if their voting record is in accordance with their stated positions on gun rights and Second Amendment issues on which they campaigned. If not, we will propose a letter writing campaign to make sure that the news media is made aware of a new representative’s failure to follow through on campaign promises and positions. As part of the political discussion, membership discussed their thoughts about the likelihood that some contests in Missouri may have been lost due to voter fraud. Finally, it was noted that the Missouri Attorney General’s web site has a link that discusses Missouri’s concealed carry reciprocity. Point your Internet browser to the following URL to view this newly added data: http://www.ago.mo.gov/Concealed-Weapons/Concealed-Carry-Reciprocity-Missouri.htm As it now stands, Missouri’s concealed carry permit actually allows Missouri citizens to carry a concealed handgun for personal protection in more states than do Utah and Florida permits, long held to be the “gold standard” for widely accepted permits within the United States. WMSA board members continue to be pleased see that each general membership meeting in recent months has benefited from the attendance of new members or members who haven’t attended our meetings in some time. We’d like to welcome our members or prospective members to come to our bi-monthly meetings in Independence and become an active part of WMSA! No further business appearing, Sheila adjourned the meeting at 8:08 P.M. |
