I have received a number of notes and phone calls about Senate Bill 179. The purpose of this bill is to allow some cost savings in the public utility industry. I am the sponsor of this bill and worked diligently to make certain that is it fair to both consumer and industry. The bill requires the Public Service Commission (PSC) to continue its oversight and prudency reviews. After passage of SB 179 those reviews should cost the government and the electric companies hundreds of thousands of dollars less. These are costs, which would have been passed along to the customer. The savings from SB 179 will reduce those costs. I have discovered that the AARP is contacting its members and asking them to oppose the bill. They have also attended committee hearings to oppose SB 179. Either the AARP does not understand the bill or they are being disingenuous. SB 179 does not impose any changes on the PSC. The PSC oversight is neither complicated nor diminished by SB 179. It has enjoyed wide support from both industry and consumer groups. If you are contacted by the AARP, please insist that they give you specific provisions that they oppose. That’s my perspective. |
